WOLE SOYINKA

(born July 13, 1934, Abeokuta, Nigeria) Nigerian playwright and political activist who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986. He sometimes wrote of modern West Africa in a satirical style, but his serious intent and his belief in the evils inherent in the exercise of power usually was evident in his work as well.
A member of the Yoruba people, Soyinka attended Government College and University College in Ibadan before graduating in 1958 with a degree in English from the University of Leeds in England. Upon his return to Nigeria, he founded an acting company and wrote his first important play, A Dance of the Forests (produced 1960; published 1963), for the Nigerian independence celebrations. The play satirizes the fledgling nation by stripping it of romantic legend and by showing that the present is no more a golden age than was the past.
He wrote several plays in a lighter vein, making fun of pompous, Westernized schoolteachers in The Lion and the Jewel (first performed in Ibadan, 1959; published 1963) and mocking the clever preachers of upstart prayer-churches who grow fat on the credulity of their parishioners in The Trials of Brother Jero (performed 1960; published 1963) and Jero’s Metamorphosis (1973). But his more serious plays, such as The Strong Breed (1963), Kongi’s Harvest (opened the first Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar, 1966; published 1967), The Road (1965), From Zia, with Love (1992), and even the parody King Baabu (performed 2001; published 2002), reveal his disregard for African authoritarian leadership and his disillusionment with Nigerian society as a whole.
Other notable plays include Madmen and Specialists (performed 1970; published 1971), Death and the King’s Horseman (1975), and The Beatification of Area Boy (1995). In these and Soyinka’s other dramas, Western elements are skillfully fused with subject matter and dramatic techniques deeply rooted in Yoruba folklore and religion. Symbolism, flashback, and ingenious plotting contribute to a rich dramatic structure. His best works exhibit humour and fine poetic style as well as a gift for irony and satire and for accurately matching the language of his complex characters to their social position and moral qualities.
From 1960 to 1964 Soyinka was coeditor of Black Orpheus, an important literary journal. From 1960 onward he taught literature and drama and headed theatre groups at various Nigerian universities, including those of Ibadan, Ife, and Lagos. After winning the Nobel Prize, he also was sought after as a lecturer, and many of his lectures were published—notably the Reith Lectures of 2004, as Climate of Fear (2004).
Though he considered himself primarily a playwright, Soyinka also wrote novels—The Interpreters (1965) and Season of Anomy (1973)—and several volumes of poetry. The latter include Idanre, and Other Poems (1967) and Poems from Prison (1969; republished as A Shuttle in the Crypt, 1972), published together as Early Poems (1998); Mandela’s Earth and Other Poems (1988); and Samarkand and Other Markets I Have Known (2002). His verse is characterized by a precise command of language and a mastery of lyric, dramatic, and meditative poetic forms. He wrote a good deal of Poems from Prison while he was jailed in 1967–69 for speaking out against the war brought on by the attempted secession of Biafra from Nigeria. The Man Died (1972) is his prose account of his arrest and 22-month imprisonment. Soyinka’s principal critical work is Myth, Literature, and the African World (1976), a collection of essays in which he examines the role of the artist in the light of Yoruba mythology and symbolism. Art, Dialogue, and Outrage (1988) is a work on similar themes of art, culture, and society. He continued to address Africa’s ills and Western responsibility in The Open Sore of a Continent (1996) and The Burden of Memory, the Muse of Forgiveness (1999).
Soyinka was the first black African to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. His autobiography, Aké: The Years of Childhood, was published in 1981 and followed by two companion pieces, Ìsarà: A Voyage Around Essay (1989) and Ibadan: The Penkelemes Years: A Memoir, 1946–1965 (1994). In 2005 Soyinka became a member of the Encyclopædia Britannica Editorial Board of Advisors.

RE: OF GOVERNORS’ ACTIONS AND ADVERTORIALS

By Henry Ekpe
Going through the Sunday Vanguard publication of February 15, 2009 edition, page 44, one came across the Viewpoint written by one Sam Ihekire who tried to distort the achievements of His Excellency, Chief Ikedi Ohakim of Imo state and that of his Anambra state counterpart, Mr. Peter Obi.
However, I am more concerned with the baseless and spinless postulations by the said Sam Ihekire, on Imo state and their Governor Chief Ikedi Ohakim. I believe Ihekire does not exist, because if he does, he would not have indulged in such falsehood because the write-up contradicts the observation of those who had visited Imo state in the last one year.

According to this Ihekire, the Governor of Imo state, Ikedi Ohakim “is busy rolling out, on the pages of Newspapers and Electronic media, how the government is transforming the state and lives of its citizenry for the better”.
The face-less Ihekire also wrote that he “enlisted the services of professional praise singers and expert image launderers whose duty is to divert the attention of the public from their lackluster performance”.
He even went on to say that Ohakim’s “Clean and Green Initiative, water scheme, 300 rural areas, Agro Nova, Oguta Wonder Lake Resort, The New Face of Imo, IRROMA, African Leadership Projects etc which are massively advertised are all abracadabra”.
The likes of Ihekire who stands the truth on its head needed to be reminded that Nigerian populace are getting wiser and know when the likes of frustrated Ihekire are peddling falsehood for their pay masters.
For starters, Governor Ohakim has not and will not tell Imo people what he has not done, since they are living with him in the state, and free to verify the facts.
That Ikedi Ohakim is “transforming the state and the lives of its citizenry for the better” is not in doubt, because whoever visited Imo state now would attest to you that there are tremendous changes, which could be noticed and felt both spiritually and physically.

Ihekire who is living under hallucination and false imagination should note that Ohakim has no praise singers and “image Launderers” because there is nothing to launder.
Gov. Ohakim as a person, has been living and doing business in Nigeria for many years. He has been in politics and contested elections many times before he won the election as the incumbent Governor of Imo state, and has not been indicted of any offence. So where does laundering come in?
About “diverting attention and lackluster performance”, Imo people are so sophisticated to be fooled. Imo is not a state where you can easily pull the wool over the eyes of its citizens.
Ohakim has injected dynamism and sophistication into governance, to the extent that others are emulating from the state.

Recently he made it known that all political appointees in the state would bequeath 25% of their salaries, beginning from him the governor. Today, the Federal government has adopted the novel model initiated in Imo by Ohakim.
For Ihekire, the Clean and Green Initiative in Imo is an “abracadabra”. Well, only sick minds like that of Ihekire can describe a well accepted and successful project like Clean and Green as “abracadabra”. Clean and Green is a physical project that can be noticed, both with eyes and hands.
In the last few months, many state governments had sent their officials to Imo to under study the Clean and Green Initiative in the state. But for Ihekire, he lives in another planet and hears and sees nothing.
Imo citizens, where the various water projects are located are there to attest to these water schemes. It is unfortunate that the likes of Ihekire still exists in the present modern Nigeria not to acknowledge the National accolades that have been pouring into Imo state since the commissioning of Imo Rural Roads Maintenance Agency (IRROMA) launched by President Yar’Adua himself.

While not mentioning over one thousand roads graded by IRROMA since its inception, what about these caterpillars, trucks and Hillux jeeps, that are now the property of the twenty seven (27) Local Government Areas of Imo state?
Ihekire should visit Imo state and been shown around the various fish ponds and rice farms being rehabilitated by the Agro Nova of South Africa .
The Oguta Wonder lake Resort is a project taken as a priority by Ohakim’s government and its foundation would be laid soon.
Ihekire is pained that Ohakim won the Nkwame Nkrumah African Leadership Project award. But he refused to mention many other awards won by the hard working governor of Imo state.
In fact, for the likes of Ihekire, they should bear in mind that Gov. Ohakim is bound to win more laurels for himself and the people of Imo state, and we have no apologies for that.

Abia set for national cocoa day

THE 5th yearly National Cocoa Day to be hosted by Abia State will be effected successfully, Governor Theodore Orji, has promised.

advertisement

Orji spoke yesterday when the Chairman of the 2009 Cocoa Day Planning/Organising Committee and Deputy Governor of Osun State, Mrs. Olusola Obada, visited him in Umuahia. He said the state has the facilities to host the event.

The governor, who said that as one of the major producers of cocoa and his administration campaign for a return to agriculture now that oil revenue is dwindling, said the event would offer the state the opportunity to showcase its potential in agriculture.

Obada had told the governor that her team was in the state to inspect facilities for hosting the programme.

She said that cocoa is the most important tree crop in Nigeria with a yearly output of about 380,000 metric tonnes and earns over half a billion dollar yearly revenue to the country just as it remains the second highest foreign exchange earner after oil.

Port Harcourt Ranked Most Dangerous City In The World

Ese Awhotu, Abuja (leadership Nigeria)

It sounds pretty surprising but not unexpected that the city of Port Harcourt, a once very glamorous city, has been ranked among the three most dangerous cities in the world.

The human resources unit of New York-based Marsh & McLennan Cos. has ranked Port Harcourt with Baghdad, Yemen’s capital of Sana’a and Khartoum in Sudan, as the world’s most dangerous cities.

Going by the ranking published by Bloomberg, Port Harcourt ranks with Baghdad as one of the world’s most dangerous cities for foreign workers as criminal gangs and guerillas seeking greater control of energy revenue step up attacks.

Port Harcourt, a city of 1.6 million was once the home of nightclubs crowded night and day with well-paid petroleum workers. Now dotted with heavily armed checkpoints, Port Harcourt’s transformation from a city that offered round-the- clock-fun to one offering round-the-clock fear. Security has deteriorated as the region moved from agitation to rebellion.

But a prominent leader from Ogoni land, the external visitors’ coordinator,Ogoni council of traditional rulers, chief Sunday Kotes has described the ranking of Port Harcourt as one of world’s dangerous city as baseless and a calculated attempt to dent the image of the city.

In an interview with the LEADERSHIP yesterday, Kotes stated that Port Harcourt currently has over sixty oil companies which are operating peacefully and comfortably. “Port Harcourt is a peace loving home, nobody should dent its image, the report is baseless and it is an economic sabotage .I stand against the report”, he declared.

The Ogoni leader described those behind the report as shortsighted and did not make proper investigation into Port Harcourt before arriving at that conclusion.

“Port Harcourt is not a dangerous city; it is the most beautiful city in the world as far as I know. Presently in Nigeria, Port Harcourt is the treasure beat of the country and they deserve the best rating” he added, observing that the leaders of Port Harcourt are intact and currently craving for investment.

Kotes disclosed that the people of Ogoni have declared their support for President Umaru Yar’Adua whose 7- point agenda includes the development of the Niger-Delta and who is currently building the roads in Ogoni land.

“We stand by President Yar’Adua and we have declared our support for him and we are working very hard to see that the 7-point agenda as it concerns Ogoniland is fully and successfully implemented”, he said.

He blamed the current crisis in the region on corruption and enemies of progress saying that “Ogoni started the struggle perfectly well and stand by what it started. What is happening in Ogoni now is not from Ogoni people and if any Ogoni person is involved it is from somewhere else.

Also speaking during the interview the President of Ogoni Youth Assembly, comrade Saturday Opoga protested the ranking describing it as a mere propaganda play.

The high wave of crime involving kidnappings, robbery and attacks on oil facilities started way back in 2006 and has continued unabated. The government put the blame on the activities of oil thieves and unemployed youths, the youths and traditional rulers of communities in the region have put the blame on politicians, government and the oil companies for their selfish approach to the development of the area. According to expatriate report more than 300 oil industry employees, or two a week, have been kidnapped in the Niger River Delta since a surge in violence began in 2006.

Majority of the militant groups fighting in the Niger-Delta have claimed that they are fighting for the poor masses of the region but this claim has been debunked by high ranking indigenes of the region among whom is the Governor of Rivers state,Rotimi Amaechi who described the militants as armed bandits who are fighting for their selfish economic gains to the detriment of the poor. According to Amaechi at an oil and gas forum in Abuja, no body who is fighting for his people will kidnap them for ransom and destroy facilities put in place in the region, however the governor admits that the Niger Delta is one of the most neglected regions in the world and a positive struggle towards its development is justified.

The militant groups have often targeted the facilities and staff of the major oil companies operating in the region such as Shell and Chevron. Bloomberg reported Tola Adeogba, Shell’s exploration manager in Nigeria as saying that the security situation in Port Harcourt is taking a huge toll.

Most oil companies have either evacuated expatriates or kept them hunkered down in guarded compounds. The metal gates outside Shell’s offices in the city are flanked by two sandbagged positions manned by guards with automatic weapons. Last week, irate youths attacked guards protecting three oil flow stations operated by Royal Dutch Shell to push demands for more funds for the local community, security sources said. A military spokesman said the attackers delivered a letter to security guards threatening further raids if Shell did not provide more funds to the local community.

The attacks in the Niger-Delta region has cut exports from Nigeria, Africa’s largest producer by more than 20 percent, and last month the Delta’s main guerrilla group said it was resuming a campaign against the industry after a four-month ceasefire. A union representing office workers said it may pull members out of the region after gunmen killed the 11-year-old daughter of a Royal Dutch Shell Plc employee and abducted her 9-year-old brother in Port Harcourt.

An Open Letter to the Publisher, SaharaReporters

By Chidi opara
Omoyele Sowore! Omoyele Sowore!! Omoyele Sowore!!!-How many times did I call your name? Three times! If you think that you will continue to publish yeye stories about our dear hard working President, you will soon receive a message from us. Infact, we will soon organize a five million-man-march to Washington DC, to force Obama to close your yeye news site and off course deport you to Nigeria. Look, one million court pronouncements will not save your passport from seizure if you venture into Nigeria

How can you continue to publish that our President is sick, just because he is slim. Don’t you know that slimliness, like cleanliness is next to Godliness. Didn’t our own Agbani conquer the world of beauty because she is slim? You even published that he is on sick leave, when he only took two weeks off duty to go and explore the natural beauty of Obudu cattle ranch, haba! He even handed over to his Vice, yet you did not publish such gracious gesture. If our dear President, elected in the freest and fairest election in Nigeria (The Supreme Court can’t be wrong), is actually sick, how come it is only your news site that publishes that?, why haven’t Thisday Newspapers, Source Magazine and Daily Independent Newspapers published such news?, for your information, our dear President and his beautiful wife, her Exellency, plays squash for two hours non stop every day at the Aso Rock indoor games facility.

You even have the Temerity to publish photos of boy o boy playing with money and rifle inside Aso Rock, how does that concern you? Is Aso Rock your father’s compound? If your father did not have money and automatic rifle to give to you to play with when you were boy o boy’s age, whose fault is that? This is complete bad belle.

As if you have not committed enough atrocities, you went ahead recently to publish that my sister and her fellow patriotic news editors collected land in Abuja. What is wrong with that? After all, we have it on good authority that you recently bought the empire state building in New york, you see my point, how on earth did you get money to buy such property. We also have it on good authority that you visited Gani Fawehimi in London and collected millions of pounds sterling in cash from him, which you have now passed on to MEND to use in overthrowing our President.

Can you now see that we have enough evidence to lock you up in prison forever on charges of treason, treasonable felony, felony, sedition, intimidation of constituted authority, defamation, etc, etc.

Anyway, if you repent sha, your own land is waiting for you in Abuja, but if you don’t, then await our parcel, I have spoken!

NEWSBEARER MAGAZINE,MAXIMUS UBA AND JUNK JOURNALISM

Journalism, we all know is the craft of conveying news, descriptive materials and comments via a wide spectrum of the media. These  include newspapers, magazines, television, radio as well as the internet. journalists, be they writers, editors, reporters, photographers ,broadcast presenters or producers serve as the chief purveyor of information and opinion in contemporary mass society.

One thing a Professional Journalist ought to have at the back of his mind is that journalism’s first obligation is the truth.A section of the media have lost the ability to play the role of watchdog of the society because they lack the morals to do so. Junk journalism is what some journalist choose to abide. The Newsbearer magazine in its January 26 edition came out with a funny and false caption “Tension in Imo State as Court removes Ohakim” The News bearer magazine seems to be enjoying its notoriety of spreader of Lies and falsehood. Why do some journalists use their access to media to exhibit total irresponsibility in journalism by feeding the mases with lies? Of the  18 court dispute against ohakim,he has won 17 of them..God who made ohakim to win the 17 cases will definitely make him win the remaining court case.Other Sponsored writers like Joachim Ezeji,Emmanuel Onwubiko are busy disturbing our eardrum with baseless criticism about Ohakim’s administration. It is time to tell the masses the truth.

It is ironical that because Governor Ikedi Ohakim of  Imo state is performing excellently well in his vision of total reinvention, renovation and reconstruction in Imo state, it has incurred the  wrath of disgruntled elements who know they can not match ohakims’s Governorship competence and who have no answer to his achievements .These fraudsters have hired shameless pen pushers to use media dishonesty to paint Ohakim’s administration black in other to distract the Governor as he delivers democracy dividends to the people of Imo state. We can not just adopt sidon look posture and watch the obviously sponsored media campaign of calumny and baseless criticism by Ndi aru-ru ala, eyan-buruku ,to sway Ohakim from continuing with the noble goal of achieving leadership excellence in Nigeria.

The likes of Maximus Uba and his friends in the News bearer magazine have never seen anything good in any government in Imo  state .Regularly we hear and read baseless media attacks on Ohakim from Maximus Uba and his cohorts .Leaders like Ohakim should be commended for this will give them more strength to do more. Let us call a spade a spade.

If you had traveled to Owerri the capital of Imo state four years back, you would have found one of Nigeria’s most backward state, replete with broken roads and a pervasive sense of malaise. But today, Imo state has undergone total transformation. virtually every aspect of comatose infrastructure in Imo state are under repair or are been scraped and rebuilt .A good government is one whose developmental efforts are obvious and physically seen as it progresses. A good government is people oriented, its priority is the interest of the people whom it is serving. It most be a government that must put in practice the principle of accountability and transparency in its modus operadi. ohakim is a good leader.

I have never been opportune to see Governor Ohakim with my eyes but I admire his leadership styles. He has renewed public trust in Imo Government. He has embarked on successful implementation of developmental programmes that is transforming the lives of the ordinary people. Ikedi wetere ndi Imo mmiri. Ikedi’s Clean and Green Initiative  won owerri the accolade of the cleanest city in Nigeria. Ikedi won the Thisday best performing  governor award for year 2007.Eziokwu bu ndu. Before Ohakim came into power there were no good roads in Imo state. Our hospitals andschools were existing in there past glories. virtually all state owned industries were in ailing condition. Ohakim has put things in order.

Ochinanwata gaba na iru. God is on your side. Imo people are happy as you reposition orient TV and Orient FM  with world-class broadcasting transmitter and as you start the revival of Imo State owned Statesman Newspaper. Imo people are happy as you encouraged and empower the youths. Imo job center has employed over 1000 youths. we commend you for extending subventions to youths and for the provision of skills acquisition centres for youths. we coomend you for the  road construction in Imo state with over 37 ongoing road projects and over 30 rehabilitated roads.

The likes of Maximus Uba wants to mislead the populace with false information about the activities of Governor ikedi ohakim. In November 2008,Ohakim rolled out Imo rural roads maintenance agency which is empowering 3000 workers with the mandate of rehabilitating 300 roads in Imo state. Ohakim has made Imo state one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria and one of the states with the least crime statistics .Operation festival is checkmating criminals in Imo state .Ohakim has distributed more 90 vehicles making a total of 130 vehicles to security operatives in Imo state and has reorganized vigilante groups in each of the 27 local government in Imo state   with buses given to them and they are  assisting  the police in checking crimes.

ochinanwanta gaba na iru.We are aware of how you rehabilitate and reequipped 100 secondary schools  in Imo state and how you equipped the general hospital Umunguma and reposition Imo school of nursing and midwifery to cope with modern challenges. We know that free medical treatment is on course in Imo state. We know that you rehabilitate the Dan Ayiam stadium for the CAF championship. Whatabout the over 2 million school desks distributed to primary and secondary schools in Imo state. what about the reactivated street lights in owerri. We also know that you bought over 100 new buses for Imo Transport Corporation(ITC). Imo state today, has become a rice producing state.

One is appalled by the level of intellectual dishonesty displayed by the likes of Maximus uba as they daily try to paint Ohakim black in the sight of the populace.let us give Ohakim a breathing space to rule Imo state. Let us all give our  Governor the necessary support as he lead Imo state in the match of Good governance .Imo ga na  ga  n’ iru.
